100 kW Generators Capable of Powering Commercial Buildings, Industrial Equipment, and More
Industrial and construction sites, hospitals, data centers and other commercial operations all put 100 kW generators to work. Regular maintenance keeps the set dependable, and its output covers a large amount of equipment.Crossing Into True Three-Digit Capacity
100 kW marks a real inflection point in our lineup — it’s the size where operations typically shift from “one major system plus building loads” to genuinely running multiple heavy systems at once. Mid-size manufacturing floors, multi-department commercial buildings, and facilities with several pieces of continuous-duty equipment tend to land here. It’s also a common minimum threshold for standby power at small hospitals and clinics, where life-safety code compliance requires enough capacity to cover critical circuits with margin to spare.Evaluating Requirements Tailored to 100 kW
Startup demand is often the sticking point at 100 kW: pumps, compressors and elevators draw several times their running current for a moment. Record both figures for each machine and size to the worst overlap rather than the average. Run the list through our power calculator before settling on 100 kW. For output amperage, our amperage chart lists a 100 kW generator (3 phase, 80% power factor, 125 kVA) at 347 A at 208V, 330 A at 220V, 301 A at 240V, 150 A at 480V, 120 A at 600V, and 17.5 A at 4160V.Planning the Gas Line for a 100 kW Generator
A 100 kW set runs on diesel from its own tank or on natural gas from a utility line, and at this size the gas line deserves as much planning as the generator.- Natural gas pressure and flow: On the Generac SG100, the required operating fuel pressure is 11–14 in. w.c. (an optional setup runs at 7–11 in. w.c.), and the sheet shows natural gas flow climbing from 768 scfh at half load to 1,280 scfh at full standby load. Generac says the fuel supply must handle the full-load rate. Its natural gas design guide adds that pressure at the generator’s test port should typically drop less than 2 in. w.c. between no-load and full-load running, and recommends a supply line that is not shared with furnaces, water heaters or other appliances.
- Regulator placement: The same guide calls for a direct-acting regulator rated for about 1.5 times the generator’s maximum gas flow, set no less than 10 ft of pipe from the generator connection. Low pressure or flow can cause long cranking, failure to carry full load and unstable engine speed.
- Diesel: For this size, the diesel fuel consumption chart gives 2.6, 4.1, 5.8 and 7.4 gal/hr across 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full load. They are estimates for diesel only. On Caterpillar’s D100 GC sheet, the 75% figure is 5.9 gal/hr and full load is 7.4 gal/hr.
Standing Up a Site Before the Gas Line: Mobile 100 kW
A towable 100 kW unit brings its own diesel, so it can cover a site before a gas line or utility service is ready. Multiquip’s DCA125SSIU4F, rated 100 kW (125 kVA) prime and 110 kW standby, shows what that package weighs and holds:- Weight on the TRLR125US trailer: 7,013 lb dry and 8,424 lb wet.
- Running gear: a double-axle trailer package with electronic or surge brakes, which Multiquip states meets NHTSA regulations.
- Tanks: 169 gal of diesel and 7.4 gal of DEF; the engine is an Isuzu BR-4HK1X certified to EPA Tier 4 Final. Multiquip lists fuel use at 7.1 gph at full load and 5.6 gph at 3/4 load.
- Noise: 66 dB(A) at 23 ft at full load.
What a Gas Line Adds to a 100 kW Purchase
Pricing on a 100 kW unit comes down to these points. Gas service work. A natural gas unit such as the Generac SG100 needs a supply that holds its rated pressure at 1,280 scfh, plus a properly sized regulator. Upgrading a meter, regulator or pipe run adds to the installed cost. Which rating you buy on. The SG100 is a 100 kW standby set; its 90 kW prime figure cannot be supplied as an EPA-certified prime rating in the US, per Generac. Multiquip rates the towable DCA125SSIU4F at 100 kW prime and 110 kW standby. Emissions tier. Cat’s D100 GC sheet shows EPA Tier III; the Multiquip DCA125SSIU4F carries Tier 4 Final certification and a DEF system. Electrical gear. Breakers, conductors and the transfer switch are sized to the output current, so the service voltage you pick changes the parts list. Our amperage chart and power calculators give the figures to work from. New or pre-owned. Pre-owned units are in our used generators section and factory-fresh ones in new generators; on a used set, look at hours and maintenance records.
