Rent or Buy: How the Two Compare
Both paths solve the same problem differently. The table below lays out where each one lands on the factors that usually decide it.| Factor | Renting | Buying |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Rental rate and delivery, no capital outlay | Full purchase price, or financed over time |
| Time to get running | Days, from available fleet stock | Days for inspected used equipment, longer for new production |
| Maintenance and fuel | Covered under rental terms | Owner’s responsibility, or a service agreement |
| Flexibility on size | Swap units as the load changes | Fixed to the unit you bought |
| Availability during a regional event | Depends on fleet demand at that moment | On your site regardless of demand elsewhere |
| Cost over multiple years | Accumulates with each rental period | One-time, plus maintenance |
| Accounting treatment | Operating expense | Capital asset, depreciated |
Common Scenarios and What Each One Points Toward
- A construction project with a fixed end date. Renting matches the timeline. You pay for the months you need, and the unit leaves when the job closes out. If your company runs back-to-back projects year-round, the comparison shifts, since the equipment would be working continuously.
- A plant turnaround or scheduled outage. Renting is standard practice. The load is temporary, often larger than anything the facility owns, and the requirement ends on a known date.
- A permanent unit is down and needs replacing. Renting bridges the gap while the replacement is sourced, delivered, and commissioned. Many facilities do both: rent now, buy for the permanent installation.
- Code-required or insurance-mandated standby power. Ownership is the usual answer, since the obligation is permanent and the generator must be on site indefinitely. Renting covers the interim if the permanent installation is still being built.
- Seasonal or peak load. Renting fits if the need recurs for a few months a year. Once you are renting the same equipment most of the year, the numbers start to favor owning it.
- An event or short-term venue. Renting, almost without exception. Event power is measured in days, and the equipment needs to leave afterward.
- Unclear or changing load requirements. Renting lets you right-size through trial rather than guesswork. Once the load is understood, buying becomes a straightforward comparison.
Rental Generator Sizes
Our rental fleet runs from 20 kW up to 2000 kW, in diesel and natural gas.- 20 kW to 99 kW — site trailers, hand tools, small pumps, and small commercial loads. Equivalent purchase options: 25kW – 99kW generators.
- 100 kW to 499 kW — larger construction sites, temporary commercial power, mid-size facility coverage. Equivalent purchase options: 100kW – 499kW generators.
- 500 kW to 999 kW — large buildings, industrial temporary power, bridging a failed permanent unit. Equivalent purchase options: 500kW – 999kW generators.
- 1000 kW to 2000 kW — megawatt-class temporary generation for plants, campuses, and infrastructure projects. Equivalent purchase options: 1000kW – 1499kW and 1500kW – 1999kW generators.
Why We Point Large Rentals to Stag Power Rentals
For megawatt-class and other large rentals, we route customers to our rental division, Stag Power Rentals. Four reasons: Location. Stag operates out of Dickinson, Texas, minutes from the Houston Ship Channel and the Gulf Coast petrochemical corridor. Large rental equipment moves slowly and expensively, so proximity to the job matters more at 1000 kW than at 50 kW. Fleet depth at size. Large units are the harder end of the rental market to source. Stag maintains a 20 kW to 2000 kW fleet rather than treating big equipment as an occasional special order. Distribution equipment under one roof. A megawatt-class rental needs panels, cable, and switching alongside the generator. Stag’s power distribution rentals cover iLine panels, distribution panels, spider boxes, transformers, and transfer switches, either standalone or bundled with the generator. One vendor, one point of contact, one delivery to coordinate. Support during the rental. Large temporary installations carry more risk when something goes wrong mid-project. Stag provides 24/7 support and load bank testing when documented performance is required. For projects where the distribution gear will be permanent even though the generator is temporary, our parts and accessories inventory covers transfer switches, PDUs, and trailers for purchase. What to Settle Before You Rent
Four questions determine what shows up on your site and what it costs to run. What is the load, including motor starting? Motors draw several times their running current at startup, and that surge sets the generator size more often than steady-state demand does. Our power calculators give you a working estimate, and the amperage chart converts between kW, kVA, and amps at your site voltage. Our team also runs full load calculations at no charge. How long will it run, and at what load factor? This drives fuel consumption and refueling logistics. Our diesel fuel consumption chart gives you a starting figure. What are the site conditions? Access for delivery, a level surface, clearance for airflow and service, and a plan for refueling. Larger units may need crane or rigging service at delivery. What connection does the load need? Camlock connections, a distribution panel, a transfer switch, or a direct tie into existing gear. Sorting this before delivery prevents a generator sitting idle while someone sources cable. If you are buying rather than renting, we carry transfer switches and distribution equipment in parts and accessories.Ready to Rent a Generator?
Tell us what you are powering, how long you need it, and where the site is, and we will match equipment to the job. Call 1-844-STAG-PWR, browse rental power distribution equipment, or contact us and we will route you to the right person. If you would rather compare purchase options alongside rental rates, our full inventory of industrial generators and financing options are both available. How Generator Rentals Work
How quickly can a rental generator be delivered?
For units in the Houston and Gulf Coast area, often within a day or two depending on size and availability. Larger equipment may require permitted transport and rigging, which adds lead time. Tell us your deadline and we will give you an honest answer rather than an optimistic one. What size generator do I need for my project?
It depends on your total simultaneous load and, more importantly, the largest motor that has to start. A facility drawing 150 kW steady may need considerably more capacity to handle a chiller or pump starting. Send us the equipment list and we will size it at no charge.Who handles fuel and maintenance during the rental?
Rental terms cover service and fuel arrangements, which is one of the practical differences from ownership. Confirm the specifics when you book so the responsibilities are clear before the unit arrives. Can I rent distribution equipment without a generator?
Yes. Panels, spider boxes, transformers, and transfer switches are available as standalone rentals or bundled with a generator. Bundling puts one vendor in charge of the whole temporary power setup. Can a rental turn into a purchase?
It happens regularly, usually when a temporary need becomes permanent or when the rental period runs longer than planned. We sell the same class of equipment we rent, so the comparison is straightforward when you reach that point.Shop Industrial Generators By kW
